Are daylight sensors a necessity or a luxury?

19 Jan 2020

Daylight sensors are digital sensors that are predominantly integrated inside Indoor Luminaries to sense the adequate presence of daylight in a living or office space and dim down to a preset Lux level of say 200lux or 300lux. During the day when there is enough sunlight exposure in a room, the Luminaire dims down to say 20% level and consumes less energy resulting further savings. A we approach the the dusk, the luminarie powers back to 80% and then to 100% level when it is completely dark. When you are talking about a space which have over 1,000 luminaries installed, the automatic dim down savings that we get on daylight harvesting is a great additional savings to the business.

We do have reputed manufactures like Leviton offering them as off the self products which are tested and proven in projects across the globe.

To conclude, daylight harvesting sensor Luminaires are a great addition to the assets of a building if there is scale and also contributes to reducing carbon foot print. One should never look down on them as a luxury and ignore the exponential savings if can bring over it’s lifeline. Agree it is an investment but be sure that it has shorter payback, given that most commercial and residential spaces are designed today by modern architects have glass structures allowing ample seepage of daylight inside the building.
